Biography

Professor Jude Davies is Professor of American Literature and Culture. He is General Editor of Winchester University Press and of WUP's Theodore Dreiser Edition, which produces scholarly editions of Dreiser’s work from archival sources.

He is author or joint author of four books and has published over twenty academic articles and book chapters, on subjects ranging from the depictions of motherhood in US sitcoms and masculinity in US films, to the interplay between socio-economic class and American literary naturalism. Initially trained in literary research, (DPhil in American Literature, University of York), for the last two decades he has researched and taught at the intersection of Cultural Studies, American Literature, and American Studies.

Research interests

Jude is interested in a variety of American and international culture, from early twentieth century literature to contemporary film and popular culture. What coheres my work is an interest in links between different cultural forms, politics, and social change.

He also has a research interest in textual and scholarly editing, through his work as General Editor of the Theodore Dreiser Edition, which produces scholarly editions of Dreiser’s work from archival sources. A new edition of the novel The Titan appeared in 2016, and he is currently preparing an edition of Dreiser’s literary, film and drama criticism, and supervising projects to edit Dreiser's short stories, diaries, and novel The Stoic.

Jude has supervised PhDs on American popular music (blues and rap/hip-hop), cultures of bodybuilding, the 'white (racial) Atlantic' in British and American cinema, representations of business in 1980s British and American film, and the significance of endings in contemporary British novels.
