Meet the team that drive the sustainability initiatives here at Winchester. 

Gavin Hunter

Chief Operating Officer 

Gavin holds overall responsibility within the University for Environment and Sustainability. Gavin is the Chair of the University Sustainability Committee and Chair of the University EMS Management Committee. Gavin is the line manager for Estates, the Centre for Sustainability and Social Justice and the Centre for Climate Change Education. Gavin has a background in Public Transport and has been leading the response to COVID-19 and the opportunities to improve sustainability as we move to a new normal. Gavin is full time.

Mat Jane

Head of Environment and Building Services

Mat has overall responsibility for the Energy, Environment, Maintenance and Building Services portfolios within the Department of Estates and Facilities. Mat is responsible for the strategic direction of both sections of the department, ensuring that the Maintenance strategy contributes to the wider carbon and environmental management agenda. Mat is full time.

Laura Dale

Environment and Sustainability Manager

Laura is responsible for overseeing sustainability and environmental issues on campus. This includes managing the University’s environmental compliance, Carbon Management Programme, energy management and procurement, waste management, biodiversity, travel and transport initiatives and student and staff engagement programmes. Laura is currently working Monday-Wednesday.

Jo Meekley

Environmental and Sustainability Officer

Jo assists with the delivery and development of a number of sustainability projects, in particular active travel, student and staff engagement such as Black Out and the Student Switch-Off campaign plus activities aimed at embedding sustainable behaviour across the University. She leads on development of education for sustainable development (ESD) related curriculum initiatives, including Responsible Futures and Dissertations For Good, supporting the Head of the Centre for Climate Change Education and Action. She supports the Environment & Sustainability Manager in implementation of the Environmental Management System and reducing the environmental impact of our Business Travel and use of Single Use Plastics. Jo is full time.

Ellie Rundle-Johnson

Waste Minimisation Officer

Ellie is responsible for waste minimisation activities and engagement with waste reduction and recycling initiatives for staff and students on campus. Ellie leads on the University Single Use Plastics Strategy and will be auditing departments across the university to identify and eliminate any unnecessary Single Use Plastics where possible. Ellie is full time.

Adam Boulton

Energy and Estates Technician

Adam is responsible for managing the University Energy Management System, running the university utility contracts, tenant billing, energy management and the installation of new energy meters across the campus. He is currently training to be a qualified Display Energy Certificate assessor. Adam is full-time and works 50% of the time for the Sustainability Team and 50% of the time for Projects Team as the Estates Technician.

Mark Butt

Major Capital Projects Manager

Mark works within Estates and Facilities Services, he is responsible for the development of the campus and ensuring all new buildings meet relevant policy for sustainable construction. Mark has just delivered one of the first buildings in the UK HE sector to be registered to pursue WELL Certified, an accreditation for health and wellbeing of users. This building was also the first in the HE Sector to be financed with an ethical loan by Triodos Bank. Mark is a Chartered Building Surveyor, holds a Masters in Sustainable Building from Oxford Brookes University and is part way through the Doctor of Business Administration programme, studying reuse of existing buildings. Mark works full time.

Dr Simon Boxley

Senior Lecturer in Education and Chair of the Centre for Climate Change Education and Action

Simon is responsible for the implementation of the University Climate Change Education Strategy and leads on Education for Sustainable Development within the University, he manages the University Responsible Futures Programme which aims to embed the UN SDG’s in all programmes and modules across the institution. Simon is full time.

Dr Robert Beckford

Professor of Climate and Social Justice, Director of the Winchester Institute for Climate and Social Justice

Robert is actively engaged with climate care issues in urban communities and has convened several training courses, including the 'Black, Green and Christian' Environmental Course (2021).

In addition, Robert is currently working with Christian Aid and other NGOs on various local political interventions. Robert I also working on getting students from the University to COP 26.

Robert is also involved in developing green industry training courses for offenders in Hampshire and developing several media projects on climate action with the BBC television and radio.

Dr Karen Cripps

Lecturer in Business Management – Department of Responsible Management and Leadership, PRME Champion of the Business School

Karen leads on the United Nations initiative ‘Principles of Responsible Management Education’ (PRME) within the University of Winchester Business School. The University was an early adopter of the PRME Principles which play a central role in shaping the Business School’s strategies in teaching research and external engagement. Karen supports the bi-annual ‘Sharing Information on Progress’ reporting standards for PRME and the University annual Sustainability Report. Karen is full-time.
