Guest Speaker: Dr Sarah Boss, Director of the Centre for Marian Studies, University of Roehampton.

In many places in Europe there are shrines where a statue or icon of the Virgin Mary is coloured black or dark brown. There are many theories as to the origin of these black Madonnas and in this lecture Dr Boss will give a brief overview of these theories. The lecture will also consider the specifically spiritual significance of a dark-coloured Mary and in particular it will examine the implicit association of black Madonnas with the idea of primal chaos and the implications of this association for the restoration of spiritual and environmental integrity.

Tea/coffee supplied.

Free to attend. Please reserve your place here.
