Tuesday 23 February, 7pm
An online panel discussion, streamed via Microsoft Teams

In celebration of the launch of the University of Winchester’s new First Star Scholars programme, we are delighted to host a special pre-release screening and panel discussion of the award-winning film Foster Boy. Foster Boy* follows the pursuit of justice for a young man, imprisoned after years in foster care in the US, and was produced by Peter Samuelson, Chair and Founder of First Star Scholars UK - a UK registered charity.

First Star Scholars, launching this summer at Winchester thanks to the generosity of The Linbury Trust, offers the UK’s only long-term university preparatory programme for looked-after children as they transition through GCSE and post-16 education – offering a pathway to university and careers through academic support, life skills development and carer engagement.

A unique link to stream the film Foster Boy for free online will be provided after registration. Viewing will be available from 7pm on International Care Day, Friday 19th February through to 11.30pm on Monday 22nd February.

Following the screening, we will host an online panel discussion at 7pm on Tuesday 23rd February. The evening will be hosted by our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joy Carter, and chaired by Frank Young, Vice Chair of First Star Scholars UK and Political Director at the Centre for Social Justice. Panel members will include Shane Paul McGhie, who stars in Foster Boy, Peter Samuelson who produced the film, and two young people who are currently participating in a First Star Scholars programme at St Mary’s University, Twickenham.

First Star Scholars is an exciting new charitable programme. We will rely on the support of individuals and organisations to ensure the continuity of this transformative programme; if you are interested in making a donation or becoming one of our First Star ambassadors please contact natasha.montagu@winchester.ac.uk for further information.

* Foster Boy is rated 15 by the BBFC

The panel discussion will be streamed via Microsoft Teams Live, and a link will be emailed to all registered attendees 24 hours in advance.
