Title: Deprivation and the use of emergency hospital care – supporting the most vulnerable families in society
Deprivation is associated with adverse health outcomes across the life course of children and young people (CYP). CYP from the most deprived families are far more likely to go to A&E than the least deprived. The reasons for this are complex and likely to be down to many different factors - from the relative health of the population to the availability of services outside hospital. The Healthier Together programme (www.what0-18.nhs.uk) has been supporting families across Wessex since 2014. However, it remains unclear how effectively it meets the needs of families living within underserved communities. Recent collaborations with the Institute of Health Visiting and Barnardo’s have tried to address this by improving accessibility to resources and support. During this talk, Sanjay Patel will explore the challenges facing these families, impact on the health metrics and opportunities for narrowing this health inequality. He will also discuss opportunities for conducting research in this field.
