The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is 40 years old and returns to Radio 4 this spring with a new series featuring many of the original cast members. It is directed by (the mostly harmless) University of Winchester alumnus and Honorary Fellow, Dirk Maggs.

Dirk is a prolific, multi award-winning writer and director for audio drama, the stage, games, film and television and, at the bequest of the Hitchhiker’s creator Douglas Adams, was the director of three of the previous five radio series of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Dirk will be talking about his work and this latest adventure with former BBC Deputy Director General and close friend, Mark Byford.

Dirk has evolved radio drama into ‘audio movies’ – a near-visual approach combining scripts, layered sound effects, cinematic music and cutting-edge technology. He pioneered the use of Dolby Surround sound in BBC Radio and was among the first nominees for the Directors Guild of Great Britain Outstanding Achievement in Radio Award.

Dirk and Mark will be joined on stage by a very special guest…

Don’t panic, and don’t forget your towel!

This is a University of Winchester Enterprise Lecture.
