This talk will elaborate selected aspects of Austria handling the arrival of large numbers of refugees since 2015. Efforts in the context of education are presented against the background of political developments. This is to highlight the impact of growing conservative forces reinforcing both monocultural and monolingual approaches despite empirical evidence pointing to the importance of acknowledging first language-competences and efforts in transcultural education. Selected findings from participatory research involving teachers affected by forced migration will be introduce and serve as example for initiatives focusing on furthering inclusion of refugees in Austria.
