Prophetic Voices and Female Agency in the Liberation from Oppression

Saturday 7 & 21 October, Saturday 4 November
Room 5, Main Building, King Alfred Campus, University of Winchester, Sparkford Road, Winchester, Hampshire SO22 4NR

A three week course of lectures and workshops reflecting on the concept of the prophet in liberation theologies associated with Judaism and Muslim religions.

Led by Dr Yafiah Katherine Randall and hosted by the Institute for Theological Partnerships.

Liberation Theology speaks of prophetic voices as those who raise their voices with the voices of the prophets in the Bible for the liberation of the oppressed. Judaism and Islam have much to offer with their own theologies of liberation which also speak out for the oppressed and the marginalised. This course will highlight Jewish and Muslim theologies of liberation in comparative perspective to Liberation Theology. They have much in common and some subtle differences.

The lens through which our study will be viewed is that of feminist theology. A feminist perspective on embodied spirituality and reflexivity are central to the approach taken in this course as we seek to awaken our prophetic voices.

Both theoretical and practical, with a strong interactive component, participants will be encouraged to contribute to discussions and the sharing of experience. The use of movement exercises will make this as much an embodied learning experience as an intellectual one.

We will explore texts from Jewish, Muslim, and Christian scriptures and writings which address issues of gender from within a patriarchal setting. Reading matter will include some relevant fiction, theological works, and poetry.

A book of course material will be provided including excerpts from sacred writings plus a Facebook page for online discussion and links to relevant websites. A certificate of attendance is available upon completion of the course.

Cost: £ 90 (Includes tuition, course materials and refreshments)
