The Hyde900 King Alfred Lecture: How Did Alfred Sound?
Talk by Professor David Crystal
Would people in Winchester today understand Alfred’s accent, if he time-travelled to the 21st century?
This talk explains how historical phonologists reconstruct accents before the advent of audio-recording, presents the sound of Old English using Alfred’s writings, and illustrates the continuities between then and now.
Hyde900 is honoured to welcome Professor Crystal, foremost expert on the structure of the English language and its history.
