University of Winchester: History and Heritage Exhibition
Thursday 13 - Sunday 16 September
Link Gallery, West Downs Quarter, University of Winchester, Romsey Road, Winchester, Hampshire SO22 5HT
This specially curated exhibition tells the long history of the University of Winchester's, its foundation & development into a leading values-driven university. Visit & discover how the institution has been woven into Winchester's history.
The story of the University of Winchester history and heritage is woven into the history of the City. This exhibition tells that story, from its foundation in 1840 as the Winchester Diocesan Training School, a Church of England institution, designed to provide training of elementary schoolmasters to teach in poor communities.
Its original location was 26/27 St Swithun Street, a grand terraced house only a short walk from Winchester Cathedral. It then moved to Wolvesey Palace before finally moving to the purpose-built buildings on West Hill in 1860 – a building that is still at the heart of our campus today.
Through change and growth - from becoming King Alfred’s College in 1928 to gaining university status in 2005 – our long history is set out in this special exhibition for Winchester Heritage Open Days 2018.
Visitors may also wish to visit Room 7 where there will be a second Heritage Open Days exhibition highlighting the contribution of female theologians and eco-feminists to environmental and ecological movements from around the world . And perhaps also book a guided tour of the nearby Cosmic Walk or one of the campus tours on the main site, please visit www.winchester.ac.uk/events to find out more of what's on.
