Professor Alec Charles: What is love?

Does the notion of romantic love represent a transcendent utopian ideal or does its cultural pre-eminence underpin the establishment of a set of unrealistic social expectations which make the sustainability of happy human relationships seem increasingly improbable?

Perhaps therefore we might need to interrogate and unpick this ideal of romantic love – this category error which relentlessly hails and defines us, this self-evident truth, this ideology whose impact is ubiquitous, perhaps the most universal export of Christian civilization’s millennia of cultural colonialism, the moral anchor, compass and lodestone of our social reality.

Tavern Talks are a series of informal talks on intriguing topics from the University of Winchester's Faculty of Arts.

Tavern Talks are open to all who wish to participate. They feature short talks followed by opportunities for discussion. There is no charge for entry, though numbers are limited by the size of the venue.
