Course details

English for Study Modules (core)

Throughout the module, learners encounter a selection of topics and academic texts appropriate to their ability, and develop a foundation of critical thinking skills. Listening is developed towards learners being able to understand a lecture format, and students will develop their English through writing essays and delivering presentations

Functional English Modules (core)

This module will introduce learners to language learning from a functional perspective. Learners are exposed to, and participate in, a variety of communicative activities in a safe and supportive learning environment in order to build their confidence before taking their knowledge and skills to the ‘outside world’.

Conversation and Pronunciation Modules (core)

This module aims to provide students with opportunities for initial concentrated oral practice with real communication in a supportive environment. The activities encourage students to express themselves and to listen and interact with each other. Regular input on pronunciation enables students to focus on individual sounds, connected speech, stress and intonation.

Learning English through studying British Culture (option)

This module helps learners to develop their language skills by providing them with a level of understanding of the culture they experience in their everyday life in Britain. In group discussions, learners share their ideas and concepts about Britain, as well as their own experiences. By conducting guided research on a variety of relevant topics, learners become acquainted with the values, routines and cultural behaviour of the people in contemporary Britain.

Learning English through studying English Literature (optional)

This module exposes learners to a variety of texts, from various periods and genres within the canon of English literature. It covers a selection of British historical writers and texts, with particular reference to the development of literature and literary forms in English. Learners will be introduced to recognising a selection of genres across poetry, drama and Prose, with a preliminary overview of some of the terminology with which to further discuss literature.

Learning English through studying Business (optional)

This module develops a broader range of English language competencies through the topic of business. Taking a collaborative approach to language learning, the module provides an initial look at some of the varied business organisations and organisational models as well as basic marketing concepts, SWOT analysis, and competition within the business environment.

As well as the development of English language skills, students begin to develop additional study and research skills. All modules develop an independent learning culture, and provide a challenging learning experience. Students reflect on their knowledge and skills, particularly through a process of peer interaction, which includes class discussion, debate and group work.
