Applied Global Practice (Management) at Winchester is an exciting course addressing important global issues from a management perspective. How should we be working internationally to combat climate change, food insecurity, energy insecurity, and poverty? How can international businesses, organisations, charities, and public and voluntary bodies apply management skills to these problems?
Explore a range of global issues covering the world economy, international institutions (such as the UN System), development, security, markets, the environment, aid, peacekeeping, diplomacy, and corporate social responsibility. You can specialise in climate change, country risk analysis, economic development, or regeneration and poverty reduction, for example, by choosing one of these topics as your particular focus.
Increase your expertise in your fields of interest with modules such as Managing in a Global Environment, Health of Nations: International Health Policy and Systems, and Growth, Development and Inequality. Subject specialisms are also available, including Health and/or Environment, Growth and/or Development, Commercial Diplomacy and/or Country Risk Analysis.
Complete projects on the management of global issues – such as international aid relief, conflict resolution and regeneration projects. Produce management reports, project reports, and participate in presentations, role-play debates and panel discussions. Choose between a 20,000-word dissertation, an international project management report or a professional portfolio.
The programme is taught by a globally experienced team, and contributions from a variety of guest speakers, professionals and practitioners add to the range of expertise available.

Pre-approved for a Masters
If you study a Bachelor Honours degrees with us, you will be pre-approved to start a Masters degree at Winchester. To be eligible, you will need to apply by the end of March in the final year of your degree and meet the entry requirements of your chosen Masters degree.

The teaching team has wide-ranging expertise of working both in the UK and overseas. In addition, a variety of guest speakers, professionals and practitioners contribute to the delivery of the modules.
Taught elements of the course take place on our King Alfred Campus (Winchester) or at our West Downs Campus (Winchester).
Our validated courses may adopt a range of means of assessing your learning. An indicative, and not necessarily comprehensive, list of assessment types you might encounter includes essays, portfolios, supervised independent work, presentations, written exams, or practical performances.
A range of assessment methods is used including management reports, project reports, software analysis, essays, presentations, role-play debate and panel viva. Students can undertake a traditional dissertation of 20,000 words, an international project management report or a professional portfolio.

The programme requires a first degree, second-class Honours degree or professional equivalent (experience in international business, international Law or international relations desirable but not compulsory). Applicants over the age of 21, who do not satisfy the normal entry requirements, may be admitted to the course provided that they can submit evidence of previous serious study and demonstrate their attainments.
If English is not your first language: IELTS 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in writing or equivalent.

|Academic Development and Research||20|
|Managing in a Global Environment||20|
Empowering students who may not have a management background to rapidly adopt awareness of international management and the tools at its disposal. This module critical reflects on the various demands impacting on management in a global context. Commercial, statutory, charities, NGOs, voluntary bodies and individual agents are assessed to examine in-depth a range of management issues active in the global environment. Tools and techniques available to managers such as models of decision-making, professional negotiation, problem solving, data management and statistical analysis provide the basis for students to develop sophisticated skills for managing in global risk environments. To support learning in this area, students will engage in a range of in-depth management seminars using case studies and problem solving techniques, which will cover all aspects of management and managing in a global environment.
|The Health of Nations: International Health Policy and Systems||20|
This module is geared to the principle of transferable learning across countries in respect of health policy and systems development, regardless of relative economic and political status. It combines didactic sessions on such as the key statements over time of the WHO and World Bank with practice opportunities in respect of the management of emerging international health issues. These include the role of regulation at continental levels, the use of managed care market mechanisms and the tension between scientific and relational medicine.
|Governance: Regulation, Compliance and International Law||20|
This module examines the increasing import of international regulations to governments, organisations and individuals. It considers the role of responsible management, sustainability and ethics in organizations. The content of the module will be grounded in literature and case examples populating International Relations, International Law and International Institutions. The module will assess the increasing import of governance, regulation and compliance evolving at a regional and international level. This will be linked to country risk analysis and risk management models. As well as covering the key generic developments in the field, students will explore the legal and compliance issues animating their specific area of interest.
|Growth, Development and Inequality||20|
Understanding the range of dynamics influencing growth, development and inequality is crucial to assessing and formulating policies, programmes and projects. The challenges prevalent in modern, emerging and subsistence economies require in-depth study to improve interventions and decision-making. Growth and development is fundamental to well-being. Inequality persists due to a range of impediments: for example knowledge, health and resource scarcity. The module considers areas such as international development, economic development policy, regional development, demographics, human geography, microfinance, health and the environment to make clear the complex field of growth, development and inequality.
The module Professional Practice directs students to focus on a specific sector, industry or field to become knowledgeable in the execution of professional duties in a management role. Combining a taught element and independent research study the module prepares each student for the dissertation. The module develops management skills, independent learning and problem solving, which are fundamental to employability and career success. Issues such as CSR, ethics and sustainability are considered in a management context.
The module operates in two parts: Part 1 Students cover generic management practice; Part 2) Students focus on their specific field or nominated pathway (generic students select an issue, for example managing ethics in the media; this may result in a report on the impact of Leveson Inquiry; a report into Disaster Management techniques and implementation might also be a topic for a management report)
Part 1) Students explore the nature of management theory, practice and performance.
|Academic Development and Research||20|
The aim of this module is to develop student understanding of the skills and competencies required in academic study and research at postgraduate level. The module is designed to provide students with the knowledge and tools required to develop and undertake research in the area of international business. Students will evaluate and synthesise research philosophies, develop research strategies, and select research methods using secondary and/or primary sources appropriate to particular research questions, relating these to existing international business theories.
The module provides the foundation for further development of research skills through a dissertation by independent study.
