My research interests are in history of education, particularly in ways women have exercised authority in and through education. I have recently completed a three-year project on women and the governance of girls’ schools 1870-1970. My recent published work includes research on gender, colonalism and national identities, auto/biography and education and education and sexuality. I have recently collaborated with Jane Martin to edit two special editions of History of Education and together we have recently published two books.
- J.Goodman and S.Harrop (eds) Women, Educational Policy-making and Administration in England. Authoritative Women since 1800 (Routledge, 2000)
- J.Goodman and J.Martin (eds) Gender, Colonialism and the Political Experience of Education (Woburn, 2002)
- J.Martin and J.Goodman Women and Education 1800-1980. Educational Reform and Personal Identities (Palgrave, 2004)
I am currently researching women teachers' transnational careers, and the history of music teaching in girls' secondary schools. I am convening an ESRC-funded seminar with the University of London Institute of Education and the School of Education at the University of Exeter, entitled Social Change in the History of Education. I am the vice-president of the History of Education Society, secretary to the International Standing Conference for the History of Education and co-editor of the journal History of Education.
I teach postgraduate research methods and supervise undergraduate and masters dissertations, as well as being Associate Dean in the Faculty of Education.
