20/21 Sept: Guided tour of historic West Hill Cemetery, with Dr Christina Welch

and West Hill Lodge, Saint James' Lane, Winchester SO22 4NY

West Hill Cemetery was established in 1840 and taken over by Winchester City Council in the 1950s. Dr Christina Welch has carried out extensive research on the history of the site (find out more about the project) and will tell the stories some of the fascinating people buried in it, from paupers to pugilists.

The site is now closed for burials and instead sensitively managed as a space where chalk downland meadow is allowed to flourish each summer as a valuable habitat for insects as well as reptiles such as slow worms. The path winding through it provides a scenic access route to the adjacent University.

Back by popular demand - Dr Welch has held similar guided tours for previous HODs festivals which have all sold out. Bookings open on 8 August.
