Biography

Professor David Chalk, LL.M., PhD, was the founding Head of Law from 2006 to 2009, having joined the University from Anglia Ruskin University where he was Principal Lecturer in Law. From 2007 to 2008 he was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London. He has taught law at undergraduate level for over 30 years and has also taught at Master's level and at the vocational stage for both barristers (BVC) and solicitors (LPC). At Winchester he is currently Emeritus professor of Law.

He is also an established presenter for solicitors’ continuing professional education and is regularly engaged as a consultant advisor on civil litigation costs issues. His book Risk Assessment in litigation was cited in the Court of Appeal judgment of Lord Neuberger MR (as he then was) in Motto & Ors v Trafigura Ltd & Anor [2011] EWCA Civ 1150.

Areas of expertise

Teaching expertise: the law of contract; Criminal law; Advocacy mooting and negotiation. 

At the practitioner level his subject is dispute resolution and particularly litigation costs.
