There are a variety of ways that you can choose to engage with our service and access support and advice, from browsing our online resources, to booking a one-to-one appointment to speak in more detail with a member of the team.

Undertaking part-time work during your studies will not only support your bank balance, but it will also enhance your commercial awareness and provide evidence for your CV to help you stand out in the recruitment process.  

• Read our guide to Finding Part-Time Work. 
• When using CareerConnect, set your preferences so that you receive daily alerts for all the new part-time jobs as they come in. 
• Apply to work on the University campus, in roles like Student Helper, Casual Library Staff, or Student Ambassador. Find these roles on CareerConnect. 
• Look out for work at the Student Union, advertised through the Student Union Website. They offer a range of roles including Shop Assistant, Bar Assistant, Front of House and Shop Supervisor. 
• Search on known job recruitment sites like Reed, Indeed, Totaljobs and Winchester-jobs. Use their filters to specify the location you want. 
• Register with Connect2Hampshire to find part-time County Council roles in cleaning, catering, health and social care, and support work. 
• Look on the jobs section of online newspapers like the Hampshire Chronicle or Daily Echo. Other local papers can be found on News Media UK. 

It is important to gain a breadth of experience while at university to ensure you gain additional skills and the commercial and community awareness to enhance your future options. 

A placement, internship or volunteering opportunity can be a great way to do this, and we can help you find one. Here are some of our top tips: 

• In addition to CareerConnect, make use of the filters on other sites and put in titles such as ‘placement’, ‘internship’ or ‘volunteering’.  
• Use specialist placement sites such as RateMyPlacement, Beetroot, Targetjobs and The Student Ladder.  
• Use specialist volunteering websites such as Volunteer First, CharityJob,  Reach Volunteering, Studenteer or Get Volunteering.  
• Connect with those on LinkedIn working in companies or organisations you might like to undertake a placement with.  

• Talk to the University’s Placements and Volunteering Teams to find out more about opportunities that are on offer, and how to contact organisations.

The latest figures show that 92.8% of 2021 graduates progressed to one or both of these paths within 15 months of graduating – this is the eighth best result in the country, and the fourth best among English universities.

To make informed decisions about your future path, try to be flexible and gain as much information as possible to assist you:

• Use our Ideas for Careers guide to help grow your career ideas, plan some next steps and boost your potential. 

• Take time to research. There are plenty of great websites, full of insight into jobs and occupational areas. You can use these to discover key trends, observe what is going on locally, nationally and globally, and understand which roles are expanding or declining. Many of these websites – listed by category/industry - can be found in our Graduate Job Search Guide. 
• Listen to employers. Attend webinars, employer events or presentations and talk to those doing jobs you are interested in. LinkedIn is a powerful tool for connecting with organisations and knowing when an employer is recruiting. 
• Gain experience. Whether you are an early career graduate or further along, aim to build this through shadowing, volunteering, or a placement. 
• Complete an online careers questionnaire to generate ideas, such as Career Planner on Prospects. 
• Discuss your plans, perhaps with someone a few years ahead of you in their career path, a friend in a job that interests you, or one of our team.

The Team also arranges a variety of events and talks with employers and organisations, from on-campus recruitment events to face-to-face presentations, lectures and webinars. These are listed in the Events section on CareerConnect.  

In your final year of study, you may have the chance to be linked to a mentor in the world of work through our Professional Mentoring Programme. This helps mentees develop the understanding and skills required to enter the graduate labour market through the opportunity to work with someone – a ‘professional friend’ - who can provide insight and tips by sharing experiences and knowledge from industry. It emphasises how the University of Winchester firmly champions mentoring and recognises its value to students and professionals alike.
