July saw the announcement of Professor Sarah Greer as the incoming Vice-Chancellor, the Class of 2020 celebrating Graduation and a visit from the Minister of State for Universities, among other highlights.

Professor Sarah Greer - currently Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost of the University of Worcester - joins the University in January 2022 as Vice-Chancellor.

"I look forward to working together with staff, students and the Board of Governors to ensure that Winchester thrives and succeeds in its mission to deliver an outstanding education for its students, enabling them to flourish as individuals and to make a real difference in the wider world."

Frontline workers of the future meet Universities Minister during visit

Student teachers and Nursing students met the Minister of State for Universities Michelle Donelan MP during her visit to the University on 2 July. The visit was an opportunity for the Minister to see first hand the exceptional quality of the University's teaching and health and social care degrees.

Vice-Chancellor, The Reverend Professor Elizabeth Stuart, alongside other members of the Executive Leadership Team and elected officers of Winchester Student Union, discussed a number of issues with the Minister, including mental health support for students, the importance of expanding the provision of Nursing courses, the merits of online learning and plans to prepare for the new academic year.

Class of 2020 celebrate Graduation

Over 2,000 students, who completed their studies at Winchester last year, finally had an opportunity to celebrate their success at Graduation ceremonies in Winchester Cathedral this month (19-29 July).

The 17 Covid-safe ceremonies also saw high-profile individuals honoured for their distinguished careers, including choreographer and Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood and actor Tommy Jessop (Line of Duty) who both received Honorary Doctorates of Arts.

Showcasing University sustainability initiatives in Plastic Free July

The University embraced the national Plastic Free July challenge, embedding changes that will continue past July.

Initiatives to eliminate the use of unnecessary single use plastics across campus include: ending the use of single use cups and containers in campus catering outlets; rolling out PPE bins across campus; crisp packet recycling, and a plastic free welcome pack from Winchester Student Union for new students.

This month, the University also launched its strategy for eliminating unnecessary single use plastics to tackle the climate emergency.

University named a top UK training provider for degree apprenticeships

For the third year in a row, the University has been named one of the UK's top 50 training providers for its degree apprenticeship courses at the RateMyApprenticeship Awards 2021-2022. The league table is based on the reviews of students across all apprenticeship and school leaver schemes on the national website RateMyApprenticeship.co.uk'

The University offers a range of programmes in digital and technology, designed in close collaboration with employers to ensure that apprentices develop the high-level skills they and their employers need in increasingly competitive markets. Employer partners include CGI, Fujitsu, BAE Systems and Quicksilva.

Welsh Armed Forces Covenant praises SCiP Alliance for work with service children

The Service Children's Progression Alliance (SCiP Alliance) - which has been led by the University since its creation in 2016 - has been referenced by the Welsh Government in its annual Armed Forces Covenant report.

The Alliance set up Hub Cymru, part of the Alliance Hub Network, which brings together over 50 partners in Wales to develop research, policy and University engagement with service children and the Armed Forces community in Wales. The report also praised the SCiP Thriving Lives Toolkit, which has received numerous plaudits from schools, universities and partner charities since its launch in 2016.

Tour de France: professional cycling interview reveals sports coaching techniques

Richard Cheetham in sports kit standing on a sports pitchWith Tadej Pogacar triumphing in this year's Tour de France road race for the second consecutive year, sports coach Richard Cheetham MBE, Senior Fellow in Sports Coaching in the Department of Sport, Exercise and Health, is the focus of an online interview with the Rijden website.

Richard coached eight of the Tour de France Directeurs Sportifs as part of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Sports Directors' course. UCI is the world governing body of cycling.

How Covid risks taking the fun out of the Games argues that strict enforcement of COVID-safe regulations in the Olympic Village at the Tokyo Games could affect athletes' mental health - and their performance could suffer too. Authored by Jo Batey, Senior Fellow in Sport and Exercise Psychology.

In Tokyo Olympics: winning could become about managing Covid stress, authors Eric Anderson, Professor of Masculinities at the University, and colleagues Keith Parry and Emma Kavanagh of the University of Bournemouth, say medals at the Games have the potential to be won or lost by those who can best manage the demands of competing during a global pandemic.
