Placements are a key part of your real-world learning experience on Adult Nursing and you will be out and about learning, challenging yourself, making connections and building your experience in each of your three years of study. Throughout your journey you will be fully supported in practice by experienced practice supervisors and assessors and by our teaching and placements teams within the University. This support will enable you to develop into a confident practitioner.

There are a wide variety of practice experiences available for your placements and you will be supported in building your skills and experience on each placement you take. The first setting to come to mind might be ‘hospital ward’ but you have so many more options. Here are just some of the areas of nursing and the types of placements available to you as an Adult Nursing student here at Winchester:

That’s enough from us! Over to current third-year student Grace on her favourite experience.

“To date, my favourite placement has been with a community team in Hampshire. I was with this team for 11 weeks during my third year and I got to grow my independence and practise lots of clinical skills such as wound care, compression bandaging, dopplers and skills surrounding palliative care. Over the course of the 11 weeks, I studied the wound care formulary used by the designated trust and began to see patients independently when my practice assessor deemed me ready. I saw patients independently in their homes and managed their care with minimal supervision. From this experience, I felt as though I developed my confidence significantly and I also strengthened my clinical decision-making skills and prioritisation of care.

"I really enjoyed practising my wound care daily as it is very rewarding to visibly see the changes in patients’ wounds when you see them consistently over the course of a few weeks. I was able to discharge patients I had seen previously after treating their wounds, with the support from colleagues. When I qualify, I hope to go into emergency medicine in A&E or AAU (Acute Assessment Unit).”
