Former Vice-Chancellor appointed MBE in King’s New Year Honours

Reverend Professor Liz Stuart MBEThe Reverend Professor Elizabeth Stuart, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Winchester and long-time resident of Winchester, has been appointed MBE in the King’s New Year Honours.
 
The award of MBE, Member of the Order of the British Empire, is awarded for an outstanding achievement or service to the community which has had a long-term, significant impact. The award recognises Professor Stuart’s services to higher education.
 
Liz, an internationally renowned theologian, served in various roles at the University for over 25 years, including leading the University as Vice-Chancellor in 2021, said: “I am humbled and honoured to be recognised in this way. It has been a joy and privilege to serve the University of Winchester for over 25 years, seeing students over that time go on to make a real difference in the world. Universities play such an important role in building a stronger society and enriching the local community, and I have loved playing a small part in that over the course of my career”.
 
As well as serving as Vice-Chancellor, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost, Liz was involved in various national initiatives relating to internationalisation and higher education, equality and diversity, the Research Excellence Framework, and degree classification.
 
Professor Sarah Greer, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Winchester, said: “We are all delighted to see Liz honoured in this way. She has been a huge part of the success of the University of Winchester and has served the wider community here in Winchester with compassion and purpose for over 25 years. We are so grateful for what she has built here for generations past, present and future”.
 
Liz, who retired from the University in July 2023, is non-executive member of the Chapter of Winchester Cathedral, associate priest at the Parish of St Matthew and St Paul, Winchester, and is also a bank chaplain for Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust.
