Course details

This course is led by experienced health professionals, who provide preparatory activities, classroom teaching, group work and workshops, to aid your learning.

The summative assessment at the end of the course, is to write a reflective case study focusing on leadership, ethics, accountability, and the link with service user safety. Within this you will develop an action plan for your personal and professional development.

This module will enable you to critically review your experience, knowledge, skills and understanding of the impact of leadership in multiple contexts with an emphasis on the link with patient safety.

This will be achieved through analysing what drives leadership in terms of personal professional values, the self, others and systems.

We will draw on key theoretical concepts and models of leadership. You will explore and debate the evidence base for new and contemporary ways of delivering safe, compassionate and effective leadership from a personal professional and organisational perspective, whilst developing your professional skills and knowledge to improve patient care. The theme of compassionate leadership and patient safety will be embedded into all topics covered in the curriculum.  Participants critically consider the principles of authentic compassionate leadership, paying attention to how we respond under pressure and support teams through crisis.

Students will have the opportunity to explore leadership in a safe space, justifying, and articulating their experience and learning. This course will include an overview of ethical theories and approaches to moral reasoning in health care ethics and ethical frameworks for professional practice.  There will be the opportunity to reflect on some of the major ethical issues raised in clinical and professional practice. The course will cover aspects of contemporary leadership models in healthcare, professionalism and professional accountability, which will be central to the reflective activities, group work and assessment.
