The Winton Society Newsletter: October 2022

Welcome to the Winton Society Autumn Update

It has been an exciting few months for the Winton Society.

We held the first of our Return events, which was a chance for alumni to refocus, recharge and reconnect. Alumnus Rob Peacock talked about finding purpose and meaning in your career and gave some brilliant advice. We will be hosting the next Return event in the series shortly. Another highlight was our first Winton Society Awards celebrating the achievements of our incredible alumni see more details below.

The Old Wintonians gathered for their reunion weekend which was wonderful to see after a two-year break. An August evening saw the 90s decade party the night away like old times in the Student Union, as well as other smaller groups getting together over the summer.

A big thank you to all for being part of this vibrant community. If you want to get more involved then please drop us an email to say hello. We would love to hear from you.

Become a professional mentor

Share your experience, successes and learnings from your career journey to support and encourage a final year student at the start of theirs. A rewarding volunteering opportunity that you can do remotely and fit around your other commitments.

We are particularly looking for mentors with knowledge or experience in media, communications, film, criminology or forensics.

You would need to volunteer for around six hours between November and May, plus induction training.

Winton Society Awards 2022

Last month we held the first ‘Winton Society Awards’, an event which recognised and celebrated the achievements of students, staff, and alumni. This year individuals were nominated across five categories in recognition of those who have made exceptional contributions in advancing their field, giving back to the community, or supporting the ongoing development of the University. Vice Chancellor Professor Sarah Greer presented the winners with their awards. Through the magic of technology two of the winners accepted their award online.

The event brought together members from across the University community past and present in an evening of celebration, reflection, and aspiration - thank you to all of those that made the event a success!

The winners are:

Alumni Artists – Showcase your talent

Winchester has a proud history of educating teachers and one of the subject specialisms available to our teaching students is art. We know that many of our alumni now work as artists, or continue to pursue their art as a hobby, and we are looking into the possibility of holding an alumni ‘open’ group exhibition next summer in our beautiful West Downs Gallery. We invite you to express your interest in taking part in such an exhibition. Our goal is to curate a varied exhibition of excellent work that celebrates the artistic vision of our alumni.

Please complete this online form before the end of November so that we can gauge the level of interest and we will get back to you.

Save the date: Friday 7 July – Sunday 9 July 2023

The Old Wintonians Working Group is busy planning the next reunion for alumni who attended King Alfred’s College in the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. Pencil 7 July – 9 July 2023 in your diary and we will be in touch with more details.

Remembering Dr Tim Drey

Charles Nicholas Crawford Drey fondly known to all as ‘Tim’ sadly passed away in May this year. Tim was Vice Principal of King Alfred’s College from 1985 until 1995 serving alongside both Principal John Cranmer and Principal John Dickinson during this 10-year period. Tim was instrumental in developing the curriculum and enabling the college to expand and diversify. His pioneering work and diligence helped shape the University into what it is today.

Memories from Margaret Woodgate, Barbara Heffer and Liz Broughton

It was with great sadness that we learnt of the death of Eleanor Phillips on the 12 August this year.  Eleanor began work at King Alfred’s College in 1975 as Personal Assistant to the Principal, Martial Rose and later worked briefly for Principal, John Cranmer.  She was the guardian of the Principal’s Office – always smiling but ever protective!  During her time at KAC, Eleanor was Resident Warden at St Elizabeth’s Hall Student Accommodation.  She was well respected amongst staff and students. On leaving the College in 1985 she became the Personal Assistant to the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Robert Runcie, at Lambeth Palace.  Eleanor continued her links with the College/University through the Winton Club, in recognition of her support of which she was elected a Vice-President in 1985.  In the years following she often attended the Summer Reunion, kept in touch with former student friends and was very supportive of the idea of the Martial Rose Bursary.
