Postgraduate Law Pathways
Law provides the framework for modern society, impacting on all our lives, so if you have an enquiring and analytical mind, a stimulating and thought-provoking Law course at Winchester could be for you.
Both the LLM Law (Conversion) and the LLM Legal Practice courses at Winchester are postgraduate programmes designed to help you build strong legal knowledge and practical skills. You learn through workshops, tutor support and online study, and you cover key areas like Contract Law, Public and EU Law, Criminal Law and Land Law. You can also choose to do a research project or a work placement, which helps you understand how the law works in real-life situations.
If you want to become a solicitor, both postgraduate courses offer support for the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE). The LLM Law (Conversion) includes a module to help you prepare for SQE1, while the LLM Legal Practice prepares you for both SQE1 and SQE2 through a partnership with The College of Legal Practice, giving you guidance from experienced legal professionals.
Which course should you choose?
Choose the LLM Law (Conversion) if you don’t already have a law degree. It’s designed to give you the essential legal foundations you need before moving on to solicitor or barrister training, making it a strong first step into postgraduate legal study.
Choose the LLM Legal Practice if you already have a law degree or a law conversion qualification. This postgraduate course focuses more directly on becoming a solicitor and includes full preparation for both SQE exams, making it a good option if you’re ready to train at a more advanced level and want learning that closely matches real legal work.
