School of Performing Arts

We are a vibrant community with professional focus, creativity and collaboration at its core.

We offer an exciting and varied programme of courses, from Acting to Musical Theatre and Dance, as well as public seminars, lectures and workshops.

The Department has a team of committed and industry active staff, who believe in creating the best possible atmosphere of support and encouragement for students. You will have access to professional and industry standard facilities, such as our excellent Performing Arts Studios, which provide six bespoke spaces and the latest technology for your productions.

Within the Faculty of Education and the Arts, The Centre for Performance Practice and Research (CPPR) is a focus for researchers in the Department of Performing Arts with a range of research interests in the fields of theatre, dance and performance studies.

Our programmes and research areas emphasise the dynamic relationship between theory and practice, and include dance, theatre and music. 66% of research in music, drama, dance, performing arts, film and screen studies was internationally excellent or world-leading. Over 75% of research made very considerable impacts in terms of their reach and significance.

The department has successful working partnerships with local venues, festivals and award-winning theatre companies which help to provide you with vital work experience on live productions.

Our graduates are highly sought after within the creative industries sector and many of them have found key positions in the relevant sector locally, nationally and internationally.

Conditions permitting: an original musical film

The planet is on the brink of ecological collapse. New conglomerates have emerged in the battle to save the planet. In bunkers around the planet, the next generation are housed safely and re-educated while their parents, the Outsiders, continue to try and keep the world functioning. Welcome to The Aviary. Written by Matt Lockitt (lyrics) and Sam Cable (music), this is a bespoke musical theatre project created during the various Covid lockdowns of academic year 2020-21.

Climate 4 Change

Four original short plays focussing on human stories at the centre of the climate emergency. A collaboration between Creative Writing, Performing Arts and Winchester Theatre Royal, Climate 4 Change 2021 follows two successful shows in 2019 and 2020. Climate 4 Change 2019 reached the finals of that year's national Green Gown Awards in the Next Generation Learning and Skills category.
