Live at home, study at Winchester
Stay close to what matters
The University of Winchester offers a transformational education in a community that sees you and backs you. Rated in the top 30 in the UK for course quality (Uni Compare, 2026), we're committed to giving you real-world experiences and the skills to thrive in whatever comes next - all within a welcoming, supportive environment where you don't need to have it all figured out from day one.
Choosing to commute doesn't mean choosing a lesser experience. Our campus is compact, well-connected, and designed with commuting students in mind - with dedicated facilities, an active students' union, and a full programme of clubs, societies, and events open to everyone.
Convenient location
We are just minutes from train and bus links (including park and ride), with the city right on our doorstep.
Campus life
You can access all the same events, societies, and academic support that any other student can - plus access to our lifelong Careers Service and our dedicated Commuters Lounge.
Flexible accommodation
Take advantage of our Student Villages by booking a room at times when you don't want to travel.
Courses are starting soon - make your move for this September
Travelling to Winchester
Winchester is centrally located in Hampshire, with excellent transport links across the region. However you choose to travel, we've made sure the journey works for you.
Home from home
Commuting students at Winchester have their own dedicated space to call their own during the day, alongside full access to all campus facilities.
The Commuter Society Lounge
Created and hosted by Winchester Students' Union, the Commuter Society Lounge is designed as a genuine home-from-home. It features everything you need to make your day on campus comfortable:
- Comfy sofas to relax between lectures
- A microwave and fridge for your packed lunch
- A shower for post-commute freshening up
- Secure lockers for your belongings
- A suite of networked PCs and a printer
Meeting other students
The Commuting Students Network
Students who join Winchester Students' Union's Commuting Students Network have the chance to connect with other students who share similar circumstances. There are monthly get-together events held on different days and times to try and make them accessible to as many people as possible. Whether students are commuting from within Hampshire or further afield, our Commuting Students Network brings people together and makes them a part of the Winchester community.
"There's still a sense of community - the commuting experience, although different to those who live in accommodation, is a real one."
- Olivia, Winchester commuting student
Clubs and societies
Being a commuting student doesn't mean missing out on the social side of university life. Winchester Students' Union offers a wide range of societies covering a huge range of interests - and every single one is open to you. The Students' Union website has all the information you need to start planning your new life as a student.
Not sure where to start?
After Freshers Week in September, the Students' Union runs a Give it a Go week - your chance to sample as many groups as you like, with zero commitment. And if the society you're looking for doesn't exist yet, you can start one.
