17 Jan 2018

The unique capacities of religion, the possibilities of culture and art as modern paths to salvation and the so-called war on terror’s impact on atheism are set to be explored at an event at the University of Winchester next month.

Cultural theorist and literary scholar Terry Eagleton, Distinguished Professor in the Department of English and Creative Writing at Lancaster University, reflects on a range of topics of concern to those who envision a future in which just and compassionate communities thrive in Culture and Faith, the latest University Foundation Lecture.

Terry Biddington, Lecturer in Practical Theology and Dean of Spiritual Life at the University of Winchester, said: “Professor Eagleton is one of the one of the most creative and inspirational thinkers alive today. His rigorous critique of so many of our cultural and religious norms and assumptions has proven to be as invaluable as it is life-transforming. The University of Winchester is proud to be hosting this event.”

The talk will be preceded by an optional meal and followed by a Q&A discussion.

Terry Eagleton is an internationally-celebrated literary scholar and cultural theorist. Eagleton obtained his PhD at Cambridge and specialises in the history and literature of the nineteenth and twentieth century and Marxist theory.
