Undergraduate teaching at the University of Winchester has been rated as generally “very high quality” but “outstanding” in some areas in the latest round of assessments by the Office for Students (OfS).
The University received an overall Silver Rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) 2023 published today (Thursday) which means Winchester delivers “very high quality” student experience and outcomes for its undergraduates.
TEF ratings, introduced in 2017 by the government, are aimed at improving the quality of education in higher education at undergraduate level.
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Winchester Professor Sarah Greer said: “We are delighted to have retained our Silver rating which is a testament to the hard work of all our staff.
“This rating means that the TEF panel assessed our teaching, assessment, feedback and course content as being of very high quality.
“We are also pleased that they drew particular attention to the employability skills which we embed throughout our courses. We always aim to give our students the skills and knowledge required by employers in a competitive jobs market and this report reinforces our position as one of the top 10 universities in the UK for graduates in employment or further study 15 months after graduation.”
There are four levels of attainment in the TEF:
An expert panel convened by the Office for Students awards institutions rankings for Student Experience and Student Outcomes which contribute towards an overall ranking. Winchester achieved Silver (very high quality) across all three - but in some areas, the panel said the University reached an outstanding level of provision, including staff development.
With respect to Student Experience, the panel concluded Winchester’s “very high-quality teaching, assessment, feedback, course content and delivery inspire students to actively engage in and commit to their learning and stretch students to develop knowledge and skill.”
The report also pointed to comments from external examiners on “professional skills, employability and real-world practice, suggesting some evidence of contribution to a very high-quality academic experience”.
The TEF report panel is made up of academics, students and employer representatives and uses student data returned by providers to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) Graduate Outcomes and National Student Survey (NSS)
