Sculptor Amy unveils her tribute to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards

One of the University of Winchester’s artists in residence Amy Goodman has turned two rock legends into bronze in their hometown.

Amy Goodman recently unveiled her statues of Rolling Stones Mick Jagger and Keith Richards in their hometown of Dartford, Kent.

The commission, from Dartford Borough Council, with funding from Bellway Homes, is a big departure for Amy who is best known for her equestrian and military subjects.

“It came out of left field but it’s been a really exciting project,” said Amy “I’ve always loved their music - it’s been the landscape of so many of our lives.”

And the Stones provided the soundtrack in Amy’s Andover studio as she worked on the two figures.

Her depiction of Jagger in prancing mode has also drawn comparisons with her galloping equine statues, and fans have been quick to cite the Stones’ hit Wild Horses in puns of praise.

“My work is about fluidity of line and texture, and I think the figure of Mick shares that with some my horses,” said Amy.

She has sculpted Keith’s famous Fender Telecaster ‘Micawber’, originally gifted from Eric Clapton. She has shown it with its distinctive tuning and five strings set up.

And Amy has the satisfaction that Keith and ‘The Rolling Stones’ approve of work as they have shared images on social media.

The bronzes, entitled The Glimmer Twins, were unveiled by Keith’s grand-daughter Ava.

Following on from rock royalty Amy has moved onto real royalty with her latest commission – two sculptures of Queen Elizabeth II. One showing the Queen aged 26 at the time of her coronation will stand in Romsey and the other, for Andover, will show the late monarch in her 70s.

Amy has been artist in residence at the University of Winchester since 2013 and several of her works can be seen around the campus notably the Angel on the Winton Building.
