There are now more opportunities for those who already have higher education qualifications to achieve their Bachelor degrees at the University of Winchester without having to repeat previous study.

The University is expanding the number of top-up degrees it offers, giving people with a Higher National Diploma (HND), Foundation Degree or other equivalent qualifications the chance to complete an honours degree in just one year.

Details of this new range of courses will be available at the University’s next Open Day, on Saturday 13 September, when prospective students will also have the chance to find out about the full range of undergraduate courses on offer.

The University has designed the new top-up courses to meet the needs of mature students who have studied university-level courses at a college and now wish to go a step further to improve their career prospects.

A menu of courses has been developed which focuses on subjects already taught in local colleges, many of which have strong partnerships with the University, to support those who wish to continue their learning journey.

Top-up degree options include:

Anyone taking one of these year-long courses will be eligible to apply for student finance and all other resources open to undergraduates and post-graduates.

Top-up degrees are awarded by the University of Winchester and recognised in the same way as traditional three-year Bachelor’s degrees. On successful completion of their course, students will be able to attend one of the graduation ceremonies at Winchester Cathedral to receive their degree certificate.

Pro Vice-Chancellor, Dr Angus Paddison, said, “At Winchester we are committed to widening participation in Higher Education. Promoting our new wider selection of top-up degrees offers many people who might have thought that their academic journey had ended the chance to take the next step and enhance their prospects.”

Students still have time to join these courses for the 2025/26 academic year which begins at the end of September and applications can be made via the UCAS service. University staff are available to talk to students about the courses and to help them through the application process.
