Faculty of Education and the Arts

An established provider of high-quality programmes in the fields of teaching, the academic study of education, performing arts, film and media, and journalism.



The Faculty is home to the Institute of Education, Department of Education and Childhood Studies, Department of Performing Arts, and School of Media and Film.

We offer a wide range of dynamic courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate degree level that are tailored to meet the needs of the professions. These programmes are consistently rated highly in internal and national surveys of student satisfaction.

Our teaching staff have both practical know-how and academic expertise with many years of experience in these subject areas. The faculty is dedicated to inspirational learning, combining highly creative teaching with work placements and impactful research and knowledge exchange.

The Faculty of Education and The Arts has a strong record in Research, Knowledge Exchange, and Consultancy. The Latest Research Excellence Framework in 2021 evidenced a 147% increase in institutional research power, the 17th biggest increase nationally.

Education produced the second largest increase in Research Power rank in the Education league table, moving from 62nd to 36th, up 26 places. They increased their 4* research contribution by the largest volume institutionally, increasing from 12% to 20% 4*, while more than tripling FTE submitted. 66% of research in music, drama, dance, performing arts, film and screen studies was internationally excellent or world-leading. Over 75% of research made very considerable impacts in terms of their reach and significance.
