Institute of Education

Welcome to the Institute of Education
We have been recognised by Ofsted as a provider of ‘outstanding’ Initial Teacher Education in England. This report, which states how our students ‘display impressive levels of confidence and understanding about how to be effective teachers’, is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our staff, students and partnership schools.
According to the Good Teacher Training Guide 2017, we are the top undergraduate teacher training provider in the South, leading the way in values-driven education since 1840. The Guardian ranked us 9th for education in the whole of the UK.
The Faculty of Education is proud of its reputation and commitment to programmes which are intellectually stimulating and dedicated to student entitlement. It has an outstanding record of employability in teaching.
The Institute offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes leading to the award of Qualified Teacher Status. Immerse yourself in the theory and practice of teaching through our unique approach which gives you flexibility to progress through a three or four-year route or even work towards a Masters.
School placements extend the learning undertaken here. We have partnerships with over 600 schools providing you with excellent opportunities to gain experience and develop as skilled practitioners.
School experience is both exhilarating and exhausting. It is an opportunity to put what you have learnt, discussed and reflected upon in class and previous experiences into practice. You are not placed as an apprentice in a school, but are there to explore what works and how you can improve teaching and learning.
The Faculty of Education has a strong record within both Research and Knowledge Exchange and Consultancy. The Latest Research Excellence Framework, in 2014, showed 87 per cent of our education research is of international quality, with 20 per cent recognised as world-leading.
The Resource Base, located in Herbert Jarman Building where much of the teaching takes place, provides staff and students with excellent resources to enhance the teaching and learning in the department. It houses large collections of materials to support many curriculum areas but especially science, special educational needs, art and design and technology.
We have a dedicated student support team to help you have a safe and rewarding time at university.
