The aim of this short course is to enable healthcare professionals to advance their knowledge and understanding of decision making.  This course provides opportunities to critically analyse and appraise clinical decision-making theories and frameworks.  Through critical reflection within the module, students will be able to develop their skills in decision-making and evaluate their own decision-making processes when dealing with rapidly changing situations, uncertainty and risk.

Course details

Lectures will cover the following topics: Decision-making theory; Pattern recognition; Information processing; Intrinsic and extrinsic factors affecting decision making; Risk assessment and management; managing uncertainty; legal, professional and ethical issues in decision making; Bayesian inference - statistical probability and testing; Human and system factors in decision making; shared decision making; Clinical supervision.

To gain the credits students will be required to submit a 3,000 word critical reflection, in which theory is applied to a decision-making episode from personal practice.
