Extended Independent Project: Service Improvement

This module aims to equip students to be able to undertake an independent service improvement project in their workplace or within their professional field.

Course overview

Students will attend classes for taught content in Semester 1 to acquire the knowledge and skills required to undertake such a project, such as research and evaluation skills, both quantitative and qualitative.  Students will learn how to critique relevant professional and academic literature.  This will culminate in the design of a service improvement project which the student will then undertake in Semester 2.  Students will be supported by a university tutor.  The project will be written up either as a research, evaluation or service improvement report, or a systematic literature review.  The module will culminate in a poster presentation event for students, tutors and employers.

Course details

Lectures will cover the following topics: the philosophical background of research and evaluation; the differences between research, service evaluation and service improvement; how to search the literature and how to evaluate what it is communicating; ethical considerations in research and evaluation; qualitative methods: data gathering and analysis; quantitative methods: data gathering and analysis; how to write a research proposal; how to present a project to specialist and non-specialist audiences: dissertations, reports, posters, infographics and conferences.

To gain the credits students will be required to submit a project proposal, a project write-up and present a poster that communicates the project rational, design and findings.

Suitable for all practicing health and social care professionals who have already gained 120 credits from modules within the MSc Professional Practice.
